Rivertown Law
Explain a non-compete clause in plain English
Explain this simply: "Employee shall not, for 12 months following termination, engage in any business competitive with the Company within 50 miles."
In plain English: for **one year** after leaving, the person can't work for or start a **competing** business **within 50 miles**. Worth flagging to the client: - 12 months + 50 miles is usually reasonable, but enforceability depends on your state. - "Any competitive business" is broad — narrowing it to specific roles makes it more likely to hold up. - It only limits *competitive* work; unrelated jobs anywhere are fine.
